PUBLIC LECTURE
THE PUBLIC/PRIVATE DIVIDE; AND ITS IMPLICATIONS FOR THE EXTENT OF JUDICIAL INTERVENTIONS IN CIVIL DISPUTES
Thursday, 28 November 2013, 5.30pm - 6.30pm, followed by refreshments
Law Theatre, ANU College of Law, Building 5 Fellows Rd
The Australian National University
Speaker: The Hon Justice Patrick Keane, Justice of the High Court of Australia
Differing perceptions of what is public and what is private affect the development of the law in many fields of legal practice. Of particular interest is the extent to which the public/private distinction may serve to explain some of the limits of judicial intervention in disputes between parties to voluntary relationships.

INAUGURAL PATRON'S ADDRESS
JUDGES & THE ACADEMY: DIALOGUE OF THE HARD OF HEARING
Tuesday, 30 October 2012, 5.30pm
Court-room 1, Level 21, Federal Court of Australia, Sydney
Speaker: Chief Justice Robert French AC, Patron of the Australian Academy of Law.
The things that Judges do and that academics do are different in kind. There is
nevertheless a "dialogue" of sorts as Judges refer to academic work and academics
review, analyse and criticise the work of the Court and offer syntheses and
extrapolate doctrinal developments good and bad. This presentation offers a judicial
perspective on the interaction between legal academic writing and the judicial
function.
